Troubleshooting vim.fault.invalidlogin in VirtualCenter logs

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Selecting License type or Networking results in an error
  • Configuring the ESX host results in an error
  • VirtualCenter process (vpxd) core dumping periodically causes other hosts to behave abnormally
  • The following error appears in the logs:

    vim.fault.invalidlogin

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.0.x

Resolution

Note: Before you begin, refer to Restarting the Management agents on an ESX Server (1003490) for important information on restarting the mgmt-vmware service.
The error is generated after upgrading to VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 1.
To troubleshoot this error:
  1. Disable VMware High Availability on the cluster.
  2. Disconnect the ESX host in VirtualCenter.
  3. Restart the management agents. For more information, see Restarting the Management agents on an ESX Server(1003490).
  4. Run the following command on the ESX or ESXi host:

    userdel vpxuser

  5. Connect the ESX host to the VirtualCenter inventory.
