Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to upgrade from VMware Workstation 9 to VMware Workstation 10.

Environment

VMware Workstation 10.x (Windows)
VMware Workstation 9.x (Linux)

Resolution

Before Upgrading

Before upgrading to VMware Workstation 10:

• Ensure that your physical machine meets the system requirements. For more information, see Introduction and System Requirements in Getting Started with VMware Workstation 10.x.
   
• Shutdown your virtual machines.

Upgrading

To upgrade to VMware Workstation 10, you can use one of these options:

• When you start VMware Workstation, you may be prompted for an available upgrade. Click Upgrade Now to perform the upgrade.
• From the Workstation user interface, select Help > Software Updates.
• Download the full installer from VMware, and run the installer to perform the installation.

  To download VMware Workstation:

  1. Navigate to the VMware Workstation Download Center.
  2. Based on your requirements, click Go to Downloads for VMware Workstation 10 for Windows or VMware Workstation 10 for Linux.
  3. Click Download Now.
  4. If prompted, log in to your Customer Connect profile. If you do not have a profile, create one. For more information see, How to create a Customer Connect profile (2007005).
  5. Ensure that your profile is complete and enter all mandatory fields. For more information see, How to update your Customer Connect profile (2086266).
  6. Review the End User License Agreement and click Accept.
  7. Click Download Now.

Post-Upgrade

After the upgrade to VMware Workstation 10 is complete:

1. Upgrade the virtual machine hardware version:
   1. Click Upgrade Hardware version on the Virtual Machine Summary page. You can also select VM > Manage > Change Hardware Compatibility.
   2. Follow the steps in the Wizard and click Finish when the process is complete.
       
2. Power on the virtual machine and update VMware Tools:
   1. Click VM > Update VMware Tools. The VMware Tools installation Wizard starts in the virtual machine.
   2. Follow the steps in the Wizard and click Finish when the process is complete.
   3. Restart the virtual machine.
