Issue/Introduction

  • Cannot install vCenter Update Manager 5.1
  • Installing vCenter Update Manager 5.1 fails
  • vCenter Update Manager 5.1 is unable to register with vCenter Server 5.1.
  • You see the error:

    vCenter Server username and password entered is not recognized. Please try again.

  • In the vminst.log file, you see entries similar to:

Environment

  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.1.x
  • VMware vSphere Update Manager 5.5.x

Cause

The issue occurs when the user attempting to register with vCenter Server does not have login permissions to the Domain Controller at the Active Directory Level.

Resolution

Edit the Active Directory User that is registering Update Manager to vCenter Server using the steps below.

  1. Log in to the Active Directory Domain Controller as the DC Administrator.
  2. Navigate to AD Users and Groups > Users > User Name > Properties > Account > Log On To.
  3. Add Domain Controller to the list of allowed machines.
