Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 1.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.1.x

Cause

The VMware vCenter Update Manager UMDS service fails if it cannot download a patch within the default timeout limit of 30 seconds.
This can happen on proxy servers or if the server has an anti-virus utility (which can slow downloads).

Resolution

VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0 Update 2 and above have an option to increase the default timeout limit.
To increase the default timeout limit from the command-line, run the command:
vmware-umds.exe -S --timeout <higher_value>
You can see the new timeout value in the <downloadRecvTimeoutSeconds> tag in the downloadconfig.xml on the VMware vCenter Update Manager UMDS server.
  • The default location is: C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\downloadConfig.xml
