Update Manager Service fails to download patches with proxy configured

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Update Manager fails to download patches
• Update Manager fails to download updates
• VMware Update Manager Download Service is installed on a standalone host
• An Internet proxy is configured
• The download fails with this error in the log:
  
  INFO - [httpDownload, 726] Status code: 407
  ERROR - [httpDownload, 878] Error: proxy authentication is required, but no auth info is provided
  ERROR - [hostUpdateMetadataMgr, 455] Download host update metadata error, Error: proxy authentication is required, but no auth info is provided

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.1.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 1.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Cause

After configuring the proxy settings using vum-proxyAuthCfg.exe, it populates these keys in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware Update Manager\Proxy folder of the registry:

• ProxyUserName
• ProxyPassword

VMware Update Manager does not read these registry settings.

Resolution

Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine. For more information on backing up and restoring the registry, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 136393.

To work around this issue, create two identical strings in the folder one level up in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware Update Manager

Create these new strings:

• ProxyUserName
• ProxyPassword

The value of these strings must be the same as those in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware Update Manager\Proxy.
