Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Booting a Windows 7 virtual machine that was created from a physical-to-virtual (P2V) conversion fails.
  • The virtual machine boots to a black screen with the error:

No physical memory is available at the location required for the Windows Boot Manager. The System can not continue.

Environment

VMware vCenter Converter 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Converter 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Converter 4.2.x

Cause

This issue can occur if the specified amount of memory for the virtual machine is set too low.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, edit the memory settings.
To edit the memory settings:
  1. Launch vSphere Client.
  2. Power-down the virtual machine.
  3. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  4. In the Hardware tab select Memory.
  5. Specify an appropriate amount of memory for this virtual machine. Ensure that you specify the guest operating system recommended minimum or more.
  6. Click OK to close the windows and power on the virtual machine.

Additional Information

If you see this error after implementing the workaround, see Converting a virtual IDE disk to a virtual SCSI disk (1016192):

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem.
