ESXi fails to boot with the error: "Error Loading /s.v00 Fatal Error: 8 (Device Error)"

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • ESXi 5 does not boot after completing the installation
  • ESXi 5 does not boot after being upgraded from ESXi 4.1
  • You see one of these errors on the screen:

    Error Loading /s.v00 Fatal Error: 8 (Device Error)

    Error: Error loading SV00 Volume corrupt/ out of resources


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5

Cause

This issue can occur if you are using:

  • Hardware that is not listed in the VMware Hardware Compatibility Guide
  • A corrupt ESXi 5.x installation file supplied by a vendor
  • A vendor-provided USB drive or CD/DVD media that is faulty
  • The boot device, such as a USB Flash Drive or SD Flash Card, that is being installed on is corrupt or faulty

Resolution

To resolve this issue, confirm that your hardware is supported and then contact the vendor for replacement media or download the most recent ESXi 5.x revision from the Broadcom Download Center.

Note: ESXi 5.x is offered in an .iso format for transfer to CD and a.zip file suitable for a USB drive.
