Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • If the host is running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Service Pack 2 or OpenSUSE 11, VMware Workstation fails to load when restarting the host after the initial installation
  • You see the errors:
    • Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory.
Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.

Environment

VMware Workstation 7.x (Linux)
VMware Workstation 6.x (Linux)
VMware Workstation 8.x (Linux)

Resolution

This issue is resolved in Workstation 6.5.4, but is present in Workstation 7 and 8. You can download the latest version of Workstation 6.5.x from our Download Center.
To ensure that the host starts after the first installation:
  1. Install VMware Workstation.

  2. Disable runlevels 2 and 3. To do so:

    1. In SUSE 10:

      1. Open a command prompt. For more information, see Opening a command or shell prompt (1003892).

        Run these commands:
      2. su -

Note: Enter your SUSE password when prompted. For security reasons, the typed password is not displayed.

      3. chkconfig --list vmware

Note: The output displays the run levels assigned to
        vmware:
        vmware 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off

      4. chkconfig --level 5 vmware on

      5. chkconfig --list vmware

Note: The output appears, confirming the change to run level 5 only:
        vmware 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off

    2. In SUSE 11:

      1. Go to Yast > System > System Services(Runlevel) >Expert Mode.
      2. Uncheck levels 2 and 3.

  3. Restart your host operating system.
