Symptoms:
A Windows virtual machine that has VMware Tools installed reports Event ID 105 in the Windows Application Event Viewer
In the Windows Event Viewer tab, you see these messages:
Event Type: Information Event Source: VMTools Event Category: None Event ID: 105 Date: 2/25/2011 Time: 7:54:53 AM User: N/A Computer: Name Description: The description for Event ID ( 105 ) in Source ( VMTools ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: The event log file is corrupt.
This issue is resolved in ESX/ESXi 4.1 Update 2. You can download the most recent update from the vSphere Download Center.
This message is harmless and can be safely ignored.
To workaround this issue:
Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
Navigate to HLEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\vmtools.
Modify the value of Event Messages Filefrom C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\vmwareservice.exeto C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\vmtoolsd.exe.
