Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
You may experience these symptoms:
  • A virtual machine running SLES 10 or SLES 11 in a virtual machine, for which SLES is selected as the guest operating system type, does not include vmxnet3 in the Adapter Type dropdown menu.
  • The problem is most likely to occur in virtual machines that are migrated from ESX 3.x to ESX 4.x. It might also happen in other circumstances.

VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESX 4.0.x

Resolution

The vmxnet3 option becomes available if you change the guest operating system type from SLES to SLES10 or SLES11.
To resolve the issue:
  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  3. Click the Options tab and click General Options.
  4. In the version field, choose either SLES10 or SLES11.
