Installing vCenter Server 5.x fails with the error: Setup cannot create vCenter Server Directory Services instance

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

When attempting to install VMware vCenter Server 5.x on a server in which an earlier instance of vCenter Server was running, you experience these symptoms:

• The vCenter Server 5.x installation fails
• You see the error:
  
  Setup cannot create vCenter Server Directory Services instance. Refer to c:\users\Admini~1\...\jointool-0.log for more details.Click Yes to force this operation.

• In the status.txt file located at %TEMP%, you see the error:

Failed to initialize LDAP instance manager:
Action: Local ldap environment verification
Problem: LDAP tools not found in "C:\Windows\ADAM"

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the vCenter Server ADAM database installation conflicts with any other variation of Active Directory on the guest operating system.

Note: This issue can also occur if you are upgrading a vCenter Server that is part of a Linked Mode group. Linked Mode must be disabled before any upgrade/installation of vCenter Server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

1. Open Server Manager in the Windows 2008 Server system where you want to install vCenter Server.
2. Click Roles.
3. Check if Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services is present.
4. If yes, click Remove Roles.
5. Deselect the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services server role.
6. Restart the Windows system.
7. Open Server Manager in the Windows 2008 Server system where you want to install vCenter Server.
8. Click Roles.
9. Check if Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services is present.
10. If no, click Add Roles.
11. Select the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services server role.
