Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You cannot start the VMware VirtualCenter Server service.
  • Starting the VMware VirtualCenter Server service fails.
  • In the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VirtualCenter\vpxd.log file, you see entries similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the Windows partition in which vCenter Server is installed is marked as offline.

For example, vCenter Server is installed on Windows 2008 in the D:\ drive and the drive is marked as offline.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, set the windows partition in which vCenter Server is installed to online

To set the partition to online:
  1. Log in to your system as an Administrator.
  2. Click Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management.
  3. Right-click the disk and click Online.
