Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot upgrade Update Manager
  • Upgrading Update Manager fails
  • You see the error:

    Error 25005 Setup failed to generate the SSL keys
  • Uninstalling Update Manager does not resolve the issue
  • You are logged in as the local administrator
  • The default installation paths used during the Update Manager installation is the C:\ drive
  • Custom SSL keys are not being used


Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs if you are using the default installation paths for Update Manager.

Resolution

To work around this is issue, try selecting a non-default pathname. For example, when upgrading Update Manager, use an alternative path such as C:\vmware
Alternatively, rename the Update Manager directory located at C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure (for example, change the name to Update Manager-old)and then retry the installation at the default location.
