Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You cannot download patches from the repository
  • Patch downloads fail
  • You see this error message:

Cannot import patch definitions and patches from the incompatible source <download url>

Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0.x

Resolution

This issue occurs when the download URL is incorrect or the URL points to a folder on a network drive.

Note: You cannot use a folder located on a network drive as a shared repository. Update Manager does not download patch binaries and patch metadata from folders on network shares using the Microsoft Windows Uniform Naming Convention form (such as \\<hostname>\Shared or \\<IP address>\Shared), or from mapped network drives (such as Z:\).

The validation checks if the patch binaries and patch metadata in the folder you specify are downloaded with a UMDS version which is compatible with the Update Manager version you are using. If the validation fails, an error message is displayed.

For more information about using a shared repository as a patch download source, see the VMware vCenter Update Manager Installation and Administration Guide.
