Cannot connect to a remote CD-ROM drive using VMware Infrastructure Client running on XP/Vista/7

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• When connecting to an ISO/CD on the client machine, the device immediately disconnects
• You see a popup with the error:
  
  Remote device disconnect
  The remote device on <host> connected to <path> is disconnected.
  
  
• You cannot mount a remote CD-ROM drive using VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client running on Windows Vista
• If you try to mount a remote CD-ROM drive using VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client running on Windows Vista, you see the error:
  
  VMware VirtualCenter Error
  You do not appear to have a valid CD-ROM drive. If this is a CD-ROM device , try enabling legacy emulation mode.
  
  The remote device on <server> connected to d: is disconnected
  
  
• This error occurs when you are logged into Windows Vista as a user with Administrative privileges and connect VI Client directly to the ESX host
• In the viclient/vmrc logs, you see errors similar to:

VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x

Resolution

To access a remote CD-ROM drive, VI Client must have the correct permissions.

To assign the correct permission to VI Client:

1. Right-click the VI Client shortcut and click Properties.
2. Click the Emulation or Compatibility tab.
3. Select Run this program as Administrator.
4. Click OK.
