Setting up a Virtual Flash resource in VMware vSphere 5.5

Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to set up a Virtual Flash resource in vSphere 5.5.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Resolution

A Virtual Flash resource is created for cache configuration on the host and to configure Virtual Flash Read Cache on virtual disks.

A Virtual Flash resource is set up on an SSD device connected to your host and, if needed, the capacity can be increased. You can configure up to 8 SSD devices.

To set up a Virtual Flash resource:

1. In the vSphere Web Client, navigate to the host.
2. Click the Manage tab and click Settings.
3. Under Virtual Flash, select Virtual Flash Resource Management and click Add Capacity.
4. From the list of available SSD devices, select the SSD device to use for virtual flash and click OK.

Notes:

• After the Virtual Flash is created, the Device Backing area lists all SSD devices that you use for the Virtual Flash resource.
• A Enterprise Plus vSphere license is required to use vSphere Flash Read Cache.

Additional Information

If your SSD is not displayed in the list of available devices, you may have to manually identify it as an SSD.
