Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot enable Storage I/O Control on a datastore
  • Enabling Storage I/O Control on a datastore fails
  • You see the error:

Datastore is connected to one or more pre-4.1 hosts that do not support Storage I/O Control.

  • There are no ESXi 4.0 or earlier hosts accessing the datastore
  • The ESXi 5.0 hosts are using vSphere 5 Essentials, Essentials Plus, Standard or Enterprise licenses
  • The option to enable storage I/O control is not grayed out

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

The Storage I/O Control feature requires Enterprise Plus licensing for all ESXi hosts. If hosts are not licensed at the appropriate level, the option to enable Storage I/O control is grayed out. However, in some cases, the option may be visible, but report an error when the administrator attempts to enable the feature.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Enterprise Plus licensing to enable Storage I/O Control.
