Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • After you install VMware Tools, the Windows Event Viewer displays this warning:
Unable to read a line from 'C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\messages\es\hgfsUsability.vmsg': Invalid byte sequence in conversion input
  • You see this message in the vmware.log file when debug logging is enabled for VMware Tools:
Cannot load message catalog for domain 'hgfsServer', language 'es', catalog dir 'C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools'.VMTools_BindTextDomain: user locale=es_ES

Note: The vmware.log file is located in the virtual machines home directory.


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware ESXi 5.0, 5.1, and 5.5. Currently, there is no resolution for ESXi 5.0 and 5.1.

This issue is resolved in ESXi 5.5 Update 2, available at VMware Downloads</u>. For more information, see the ESXi 5.5 Update 2 Release Notes.

To work around this issue, change your system locale to US English. For more information, see the Windows TechNet page SystemLocale.
