Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • SNMP trap information incorrectly displays in a VirtualCenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5 hosts
  • VirtualCenter 2.0 and ESX 3.0 hosts correctly display trap information
  • Upgrading to VirtualCenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5 causes trap information to display incorrectly

Environment

VMware ESX Server 3.5.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x

Resolution

In earlier versions of VirtualCenter and ESX, the OID that is sent for SNMP traps is 1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.

As of VirtualCenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5, SNMP sends traps out with new OIDs based on the product that is sending out the alerts.

Example:

  • 1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.4.1 indicates an ESX host trap
  • 1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.4.3 indicates a VirtualCenter trap

The MIB modules included in VirtualCenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5 do not indicate this change and therefore do not display traps correctly in 3rd party monitoring software.

To correct this behavior, import the MIB modules into the 3rd party monitoring software. To download the MIB modules, see SNMP MIB module file download (1013445).

Warning: Do not try and replace the VMware MIBS in VirtualCenter or the ESX host.
