Cannot deploy or convert virtual machines from templates after upgrading to VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After upgrading VMware vCenter Server :

  • You are unable to deploy or convert virtual machines from your templates.
  • The option Convert to Virtual Machine is greyed out.
  • The option Deploy Virtual Machine from this template is greyed out.


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs if the role to which the account belongs does not have sufficient privileges.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  1. Log in to the vSphere Client with Administrator privileges.
  2. Navigate to Home > Administration > Roles.
  3. Right-click the role and click Edit Role.
  4. Expand Virtual Machine > Provisioning.
  5. Ensure that these options are selected:

    • Deploy Template
    • Clone Template
    • Mark as Virtual Machine

If the issue persists even when all required permissions are available, re-register the templates to your vCenter Server inventory.
To re-register the templates to the vCenter Server inventory:

Note: Perform this procedure for each template.
  1. Select the template and note its datastore location under the Summary tab.
  2. Right-click the template and click Remove from Inventory.
  3. Browse to the datastore of the template.
  4. Register the template.

    To register the template,
    right-click the vmname.vmtx file and click Add to Inventory.

  5. Follow the Add to Inventory wizard and complete the registration.
