Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You see this message appear on certain hosts when looking at the vCenter Hosts and Clusters view after an upgrade to 4.0 Update 2:

    Configuration Issues
    HA agent on <host name> in cluster <cluster name> in <datacenter name> has an error : Time-out while communicating ...

  • This message may be generated after a vMotion operation.
  • Host monitoring is disabled on the cluster
  • This is similar to a documented issue in the Release Notes for 4.0 Update 2, in the section Known Issues titled:

    VMware HA and Fault Tolerance
vCenter Server reports timeout error after vMotion *

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x

Resolution

The workaround suggested in the release notes is "None. These errors can be ignored." While this is true, you can perform these steps to stop the alerts from appearing.

Perform these steps to stop the alerts:
  1. In the vSphere Client, right-click the cluster and click Edit Settings.
  2. Disable the Turn On VMware HA option.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In the vSphere Client, right-click the cluster and click Edit Settings again.
  5. Enable the Turn On VMware HA option.
  6. Click OK.
This causes a re-push of the HA agents and results in these alerts to cease and stay stable.

In some cases this issue is observed when host monitoring is disabled on the cluster.

To resolve:
  1. Right click the cluster > Edit settings.
  2. Choose vSphere HA and make sure there is a check box in Enable Host Monitoring.
  3. Once selected, right-click each host and select Reconfigure for vSphere HA

Additional Information

This is the excerpt from the Known Issues Section of the VMware vCenter Server 4.0 Update 2 release notes.

Errors similar to the following might be written to the vpxa log:

[2009-08-06 03:54:41.358 0xf7b9ab90 error 'App'] [MIGRATE] (1249555939468000) VMAP error in CompleteSource
