Cannot power on a virtual machine after enabling vSphere Replication

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • You are unable to power on a virtual machine after enabling vSphere Replication.
  • When you attempt to power on the virtual machine, you see an error similar to:

    Failed to start the virtual machine.
    Module DevicePowerOn power on failed.
    Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:1, '/vmfs/volumes/4ffda1f1-########-####-##########ff/example/example.vmdk'
    Failed to attach filter 'hbr_filter' to scsi0:1: Limit exceeded (195887110).



Environment

VMware vSphere Replication 5.1.x

Cause

vSphere Replication 5.1 and earlier supports disks up to 2032 GB in size. Virtual machines with larger disks are unable to power on after enabling vSphere Replication.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, disable vSphere Replication on the virtual machine using one of these methods:

vSphere Replication 5.5 supports a maximum disk size of 62 TB.
