Cannot power on a virtual machine after enabling vSphere Replication

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• You are unable to power on a virtual machine after enabling vSphere Replication.
• When you attempt to power on the virtual machine, you see an error similar to:
  
  Failed to start the virtual machine.
  Module DevicePowerOn power on failed.
  Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:1, '/vmfs/volumes/4ffda1f1-########-####-##########ff/example/example.vmdk'
  Failed to attach filter 'hbr_filter' to scsi0:1: Limit exceeded (195887110).

Environment

VMware vSphere Replication 5.1.x

Cause

vSphere Replication 5.1 and earlier supports disks up to 2032 GB in size. Virtual machines with larger disks are unable to power on after enabling vSphere Replication.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, disable vSphere Replication on the virtual machine using one of these methods:

• Remove the virtual machine from the vCenter inventory and re-register the virtual machine.
  
  For more information, see Registering or adding a virtual machine to the inventory on vCenter Server or on an ESXi/ESX host (1006160).
  
  
• In the vSphere Web Client, navigate to vSphere Replication and disable replication on the virtual machine.
  
  Note: If you cannot power on the virtual machine after performing this step, ensure that it is registered, restart the management agents on the host, then attempt to power the virtual machine on again. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting vCenter services (1003895).

Additional Information

vSphere Replication 5.5 supports a maximum disk size of 62 TB.
