Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
After you perform a firmware upgrade on an ESXi host, you experience these symptoms:
  • The Hardware Status tab of an ESXi host in vCenter Server shows false positive alerts.
  • The syslog.log file at /var/log/ contains entries similar to:

sfcb-vmware_raw[471437]: IpmiIfcSelReadEntry: data length mismatch req=19,resp=15
sfcb-vmware_raw[471437]: IpmiIfcSelReadEntry: data length mismatch req=19,resp=3
sfcb-vmware_raw[471437]: IpmiIfcSelReadNew: failed call to IpmiIfcSelReadEntry cc = 0xff

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1

Cause

The sfcbd (small footprint cim broker daemon) service depends on Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) to gather information. When the firmware is updated, the sfcbd service must be restarted.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, restart the sfcdb daemon on the host.
  1. Connect to the ESXi host using a SSH session. For more information, see Using ESXi Shell in ESXi 5.x (2004746).
  2. Run this command:

    /etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog restart
