Issue/Introduction
Symptoms:
- In the Summary tab of the ESXi host, you see the error:
Configuration Issue: XXX esx.problem.syslog.nonpersistent.formatOnHost not found XXX
- This issue occurs after a fresh installation of ESXi or when you upgrade to ESXi 5.x
Environment
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
Cause
This issue occurs if the scratch partition location is not set correctly or if the local datastore is not available for the default logs.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, change the default logging location.
To change the default log location:
- Browse to the datastore where you want to save the logs.
- Create a new folder, such as systemlogs.
- Click the Configuration tab of the host.
- Under Software, click Advanced Settings > Syslog.
- Set Syslog.global.logDir to [LUN_name]/systemlogs.
Notes:
- The default logging location is [] /scratch/log.
- You need not reboot the host for the changes to take effect.
Alternatively, you can also configure a syslog server. For more information, see Configuring syslog on ESXi.
