Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • vCenter Update Manager fails to upgrade a virtual machine's hardware version.
  • The vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log file (located at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs ) contains entries similar to:

    [08:55:18:659 'VADiscovery' 4696 DEBUG] [vaDiscovery, 199] Precheck VM: SICH-SICAMS1(vm-718)
    [08:55:18:659 'VADiscovery' 4696 INFO] [vaDiscovery, 228] Retrieving VAMI version and feature for SICH-SICAMS1
    [08:55:18:706 'VirtApplianceManager' 4696 INFO] [virtApplianceMgr, 1044] VA discovery: Guest info not available: VM has OVF section but no guestinfo. Add property monitoring.


Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs due to incorrect virtual machine vApp Options settings.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, disable the vApp Options on the virtual machine you want to upgrade.
To disable the vApp Options:

  1. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  2. Click the Options tab.
  3. Click vApp Options.
  4. Select Disable, then click OK.
