Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Resolution

The Error 29114. Cannot connect to DB error can occur for a number of reasons.
To troubleshoot the possible cause of this issue, follow the steps provided in this article. These steps provide instructions or a link to a document for validating the step, and taking corrective action, as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Do not skip any of these steps.
  1. Verify the SSO database name being used. The default name is RSA.

  2. This issue can occur because Windows authentication was used to connect to the database. To avoid this error, ensure that SQL Authentication is used when connecting to the SQL database. For more information, see Single Sign On Installation fails with error "Error 29115 Cannot authenticate to DB" (2035449).

Note: As noted in the vSphere 5.1 Release Notes, for MS SQL databases you must use SQL Server Authentication database users when connecting to the Single Sign-On (RSA) database. Windows Authentication users are not supported.

  3. This issue can occur if the Force Encryption option in the SQL Server Configuration Manager is set to YES. To avoid this installation error, change the setting to NO. For more details on toggling this setting, see the MSDN article, Enable Encrypted Connections to the Database Engine (SQL Server Configuration Manager).

Note: The preceding link was correct as of November 19, 2012. If you find the link is broken, provide feedback and a VMware employee will update the link.

  4. This issue can occur if the environment where SSO is being installed has password complexity policies that are more strict than the default password generated by the SSO installer. This issue is resolved. For more information, see Installing vCenter Single Sign On fails with the error: Error 29114.Cannot connect to DB (2035949).

  5. This issue can occur when installing vCenter Single Sign-On in an IPv6 environment. For more information, see Installing vCenter Single Sign On in an IPv6 environment fails with the error: Error 29114.Cannot connect to database (2035454).

  6. This issue can occur when the RSA DB table space RSA_INDEX has a filegroup type of PRIMARY instead of RSA_INDEX in the database. For more information, see vCenter Single Sign On installation fails with error: "Error 29114. Cannot connect to DB" due to invalid filegroup in the RSA_Index table space (2036318)

Note: If the issue persists after performing these steps, file a Support Request with VMware Technical Support and note the Knowledge Base article ID (2035831) in the problem description. For more information, see Filing a Support Request in Customer Connect (2006985).
