Issue/Introduction

This article provides instructions on creating folders and setting permissions for datastore clusters.

Symptoms:
  • Permissions set on a datastore cluster in VMware vCenter Server 5.0 are lost after the VirtualCenter Server service is restarted.
  • If permissions are set on an object above the datastore cluster and the datastore cluster's view hierarchy is set to propagate to child objects, the permissions persist a restart of the VirtualCenter Server service.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs because permission added on a datastore cluster does not persist across vpxd restart.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting vCenter Server 5.0.
To work around this issue, permissions can be set at higher level than the datastore cluster, and set to propagate to child objects. If different permissions are required for each datastore cluster, folders can be created for the purpose of assigning permissions. To create folders and set permissions for datastore clusters:
  1. Select the Datastores and Datastore clusters view in the vSphere client.
  2. Right-click the Datacenter.
  3. Click New Folder. Enter a descriptive name for the folder.
  4. Select the new folder and click on the Permissions tab.
  5. Right-click in the white space on the Permissions tab and select Add Permission. Add the appropriate permissions to the folder.

Note: Ensure that the Propagate to Child Objects checkbox is selected.
  6. Right-click the new folder and click New Datastore Cluster. Enter the appropriate information for the datastore cluster and add any desired datastores.
The permissions set on the folder should be propagated to the datastore cluster and the datastores it contains. This process can be duplicated for each datastore cluster where unique permissions are required. Multiple datastore clusters can also be placed in the same folder if similar permissions are needed on multiple datastore clusters.
