VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

When logging into vCenter Server 4.1 on Windows Server 2003 64bit using an user account and not as Local System, you experience these symptoms:

  • New logs are not generated in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\ folder.
  • Except for log file generation, vCenter Server starts and runs normally
  • Restarting the VMware VirtualCenter Server service does not resolve the issue

Resolution

This issue may occur due to permission issues with the user account that is used to access vCenter Server.
To resolve this issue:
  1. Reconfigure vCenter Server to log on as Local System.
  2. Restart the VMware VirtualCenter Server service.
  3. Verify if the logs are generated in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\.
  4. If the logs are not generated, evaluate the privileges of the user account and assign the required privileges.

Alternatively, you can configure a new user account with appropriate permissions and use this account to log in to vCenter Server.

Note: If you are using a remote database for vCenter Server, ensure that the local system account is able to authenticate with the database before restarting the service. Otherwise, it may fail to start as Local System.
