Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Storage VMotion fails
  • You see the error:

    A general system error occurred: Storage VMotion failed to copy one or more of the VM's disks. Please consult the VM's log for more details, looking for lines starting with "CBTMotion-".
  • Errors similar to this appear in the /var/log/vmware/hostd.log file on the ESX host:
    • [2009-07-10 14:13:41.632 F638BB90 info 'vm:/vmfs/volumes/4a56e6c2-9319e3df-f1af-001e0bea4030/RVHOLS029/RVHOLS029.vmx'] Upgrade is required for virtual machine, version: 4
    • Failed with error 340983807: Storage VMotion failed to copy one or more of the VM's disks. Please consult the VM's log for more details, looking for lines starting with "CBTMotion".


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x

Resolution

This issue may occur if the virtual hardware needs to be upgraded.
To resolve this issue:
  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click on the virtual machine and choose Upgrade Virtual Machine Hardware.

    Note: This option does not appear if the virtual hardware is up to date.
  3. Power on the virtual machine.
