Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Cannot perform a Hot Remove action.
• Performing a Hot remove action on the guest operating system times out.
• You see the error:
  
  The guest operating system did not respond to a hot-remove request for device %s in a timely manner.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

This issue occurs when the guest operating system does not have VMware Tools installed or if the ESXi host or guest operating system is busy and cannot respond to the request in the time allocated to perform the action.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

1. If VMware Tools is not installed in the guest operating system, install it. For more information, see
   Note: By default, the Hot Remove timeout value is 10 seconds for vSphere ESXi 5.5 Update 1.
   
   

   To increase the timeout value for the Hot Remove action using the vSphere Client:
2. Ensure that the virtual machine is powered off.
3. Right-click on the virtual machine and click Edit Settings. Virtual Machine Properties window opens.
4. Click the Options tab.
5. From the list on the left pane, click Advanced > General.
6. On the Configuration Parameters frame on the right pane, click Configuration Parameters.
7. Click Add Row.
8. vmx.hotRemoveWait
   
   
9. vmx.hotRemoveWait
   
   
10. In the Value column, specify the number seconds after which the Hot Remove action should time out.
    
    

Note: Currently, this parameter applies to SCSI and SATA HBAs, NICs and PCI bridges. The new setting takes effect when a virtual machine powers on or resumes from a suspended state.
