An ESXi host halts and displays a purple diagnostic screen when using Network I/O Control with a Network Adapter that does not support VLAN Offload

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
This issue occurs in environments where:

• You are using a network adapter driver that does not support VLAN Offload
• You have the Network I/O Control feature enabled on your virtual switch

You experience a purple diagnostic screen similar to:

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

This outage is caused by an incompatibility between the Network I/O Control and VLAN Offload capabilities of the network interface card drivers.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vSphere 5.0 Update 1. You can download this version from the VMware Download Center.

To work around this issue when you cannot upgrade:

To prevent this purple diagnostic screen from occurring, disable the Network I/O Control features on the ESXi hosts. For additional information, see the Enable Network I/O Control on a vSphere Distributed Switch section of the vSphere Networking guide.
