Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When querying for local SSDs in an ESXi 5.5 host, you experience these symptoms:
  • The host does not detect the local SSDs
  • The host fails to return a complete list of the local SSDs
  • The host is unable to automatically detect SSDs
  • The host fails to recognize SSDs as local

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

ESXi 5.5 does not recognize certain devices as SSDs when their vendors do not support automatic SSD detection. Also, some non-SATA SAS SSDs may not be detected as local. When disks are not recognized as local SSDs, they are excluded from the list of available SSDs.

Resolution

If the ESXi host does not automatically recognize its disks as SSDs, tag them as SSD disks. For more information, see Enabling the SSD option on SSD based disks/LUNs that are not detected as SSD by default (2013188).
If the ESXi host does not detect the SSD disks as local, manually set them as local. For more information, see the Tag Devices as Local section in the vSphere Storage Guide.
