When powering on virtual machines, the vSphere Web Client reports the error: Permission to perform this operation was denied

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • When you power on the virtual machine, the vSphere 5.0 Web Client reports an error, but the power on operation is actually successful
  • The Web Client reports the error:

    The Power on virtual machine operation failed for entity
    Permission to perform this operation was denied.
  • In the Web Client logs, you see the error:

    inherited from com.vmware.vim.binding.vim.fault.NoPermission: Permission to perform this operation was denied.
    [ERROR] http-9443-2 com.vmware.vsphere.client.vm.powerops.impl.VmPowerOpManager com.vmware.vim.binding.vim.fault.NoPermission:

  • If you try to power on the virtual machine using the vSphere Client, you do not see any errors and the virtual machine powers on successfully


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

This issue occurs because the power on operation in the Web Client throws an exception.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VCenter Server 5.1. To work around this issue in the earlier releases, use the vSphere Client to power on the virtual machine.
