Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • This issue occurs when an ESXi server is configured with two vSphere Standard Switches, vSwitch0 and vSwitch1.
  • Before you reboot the ESXi Server, both switches are visible in vSphere Client when connected to the vCenter Server or directly to the ESXi Server.
  • Before you reboot the ESXi Server, both switches are listed when you run the esxcfg-vswitch -l command.
  • After you reboot the ESXi server, vSwitch1 is no longer visible in the vCenter Server inventory.
  • When you reboot the ESXi server, you see a warning in the vmkernel.log file (located in /var/log/) similar to:

WARNING: NetPortset: 708: vSwitch1: too many ports on system already (8448, limit is 4608)

Note: The number of ports reported in the vmkernel.log entry do not match the number of ports configured on your vSwitch.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

This issue can occur when too many ports are configured on the vSphere Standard Switches. For more information, see Networking Maximums in the Configuration Maximums guide. The number of ports on a vSwitch can be modified at any time but the changes do not take effect until the ESXi server is restarted. If the number of ports exceeds the configuration maximum, a vSwitch can disappear from vCenter Server after a reboot of the ESXi server. Details of the missing vSwitch are still listed in the esx.conf file (located in /etc/vmware/) but the vSwitch is not visible in the vSphere Client.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, reduce the number of ports on vSwitch0 and reboot the ESXi server for the changes to take effect.
  1. Log in to the vSphere Client and select the host from the inventory panel.
  2. Click the Configuration tab and click Networking.
  3. On the right, click Properties for the standard switch that you want to configure.
  4. Click the Ports tab.
  5. Select the standard switch item in the Configuration list, and click Edit.
  6. Click the General tab.
  7. From the dropdown menu, select the number of ports you want to use.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Reboot the ESXi server.
