  • If you click on virtual machine setting to Shutdown/Reboot Guest:
    • The guest does not shutdown or reboot
    • The connection to VMware Tools is lost
  • The vmware.log file contains the error:

[msg.tools.haltFailed] The request to halt this virtual machine failed because the corresponding VMware Tools script did not run successfully. If you have configured a custom halt script in this virtual machine, please inspect it for errors; otherwise, please submit a support request.
The script can be deactivated on the Power page of the virtual machine settings by unchecking "Before powering off" in the Run VMware Tools Scripts section.

Environment

Resolution

This issue may occur if VMware Tools is configured to use custom scripts instead of default scripts.
To enable default scripts:
  1. From the VMware Tools tray on the Task Bar, open VMware Tools, and click the Scripts tab.
  2. For all Script Events, select Use Script, then select Default script.
  3. Click OK.
