This article provides steps to install VMware Tools on Windows Server 2008 Core virtual machines.

Resolution

To install VMware Tools on a Windows Server 2008 Core guest operating system:
  1. Log in to your Windows Server Core using an administrator account.
  2. In the virtual machine menu, Click Install VMware Tools.
  3. In the command prompt, switch to the drive that corresponds to the CD/DVD drive.
  4. Run the setup command to initiate the graphical user interface (GUI) for installing VMware Tools.
  5. Follow the wizard to complete the VMware Tools installation.
Note: For an unattended VMware Tools install on 2008 Server R2 Core and to reboot the virtual machine automatically after the installation, follow the steps below:
  1. Right click on the Virtual Machine and click Guest then Install/Upgrade VMware Tools
  2. Click on the Console tab for the Virtual Machine
  3. At the command prompt with the R2 Core Virtual Machine enter the following command:
msiexec.exe /i “D:\VMware Tools.msi” /qn
