Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Powering on a virtual machine configured with 8 vCPUs fails
  • You see the error:

    Error msg : Virtual Machine has 8 virtual CPUs, but the Host only supports 4. The Number of virtual CPUs may be limited by the guest OS selected for the Virtual Machine.


Environment

VMware ESX 4.0.x

Resolution

If the guest operating system can support 8 vCPUs and you experience this issue, ensure that the ESX host is licensed with Enterprise Plus. For more information about the vSphere Editions, see Comparison of product offerings for vSphere 4.x and VMware Infrastructure 3.x (1010579).
