Issue/Introduction

This article guides you in using your invitation to a VMware Private Beta program.

Resolution

VMware thanks you for your interest in our Private Beta programs!

The program is offered as a service through our Community Portal and works in tandem with your VMware account. As such, an account in the VMware Communities is required in addition to a customer account at VMware.com.

If you do not have an account at VMware.com, one is created for you when you are invited to join a Private Beta program. This account has a unique, randomly-generated password which you must reset by clicking a link in the invitation email. After clicking the link, be sure to specify the email address to which the invitation email was sent as the account for which you want to reset the password.

Creating a Customer account at VMware.com does not automatically create a Community account. To use the Community Forums, you must create a unique user name for yourself which is displayed when you post a message there.

This is the process for joining the Private Beta program:

If you already have a VMware.com and Communities account:
  1. You are invited to join the Beta by a VMware Employee.
  2. An invitation email is sent to you with links to the Beta Community Forum Overview page and Discussions page.
  3. The Beta Forum Overview page has direct links to download the particular beta software. It also displays the License Key.
  4. Clicking the Download button takes you to the End User License Agreement (EULA). If you agree to that, click Yes at the bottom to be directed to the main download section.
  5. Choose the most appropriate beta version (for example, the Windows or Linux version) and click Download.
  6. The download begins.

Note: If the download ends prematurely, or if you are unable to run the installer, see The downloaded VMware software installer fails to open with an error (1030501).

  7. Install the product, using the License Key found in the Beta invitation email or on the Beta Forum Overview page.

Caution: Do not use this software in a production environment! While the software is stable, it is still in development and unexpected things may occur.

If you do not have a VMware.com Customer Account:
  1. When you are invited to the program, a VMware.com Customer account is created for you and an invitation email is sent. The invitation email contains the email address that was registered in the program, as well as your Customer Number.
  2. Because you are being informed through email, your account password is not disclosed. You must reset the password, using the link provided in the email, to reset your password. Click this link to change your password.

Note: Make sure you are logging in with the account which was invited to the Beta program.

  3. You should have also received an email for the Beta Program Invitation with links to log into VMware.com with your new Customer account. Because this is a new account, you are prompted to create a Community Forums Username. This username is visible when you post and must be unique.
  4. When the Forum Account / Username is created, you are directed to the Beta Community Forum Overview page. Here, you can begin the download process for the Beta build, browse the discussions, and review the release notes and other documentation that is available. The License Key is also listed on this page, as well as being in the Invitation email.
  5. Clicking the Download button takes you to the End User License Agreement (EULA). If you agree to that, click Yes at the bottom to be directed to the main download section.
  6. Choose the most appropriate beta version (for example, the Windows or Linux version) and click Download.
  7. The download begins.

Note: If the download ends prematurely, or if you are unable to run the installer, see The downloaded VMware software installer fails to open (1030501)

  8. Install the product, using the License Key found in the Beta invitation email or on the Beta Forum Overview page.

Caution: Do not use this software in a production environment! While the software is stable, it is still in development and unexpected things may occur.
