Issue/Introduction

Notification from traps display $V1$ in Event Text instead of the actual varbind information as in the following example:

Authentication failure from host $V1$

Environment

Smarts 10.X / 2.X

Cause

The incoming trap is processed by a trap definition that is defined in trap_mgr.conf configuration file with EventText including $V1$.

However, the incoming trap does not include any varbinds, so the EventText is taken literally, as $V1$ text.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do the following:

  • Set up logging for the particular trap and verify whether the incoming trap includes the varbinds.
  • Check the source of the notification and find the source device in the trap log. You may find the issue is only related to one or two devices.
  • If the incoming trap is expected to include the varbinds in question, check the configuration of the SNMP Agent.  Resolve the issue at the SNMP Agent side.
