Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Smarts SAM: Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) Alerts are not present in SAM Console
Alerts from virtual hosts are not forwarded to Smarts SAM Console

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

MOM Server forwarding rule is not assigned to virtual hosts

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do the following:

  1. View the contents of the adapter.conf file. This file is found in the following location:

    <BASEDIR>\SAM\smarts\conf\INCHARGE-MOM\adapter.conf

  2. Verify that acceptEventsFromUnknownHosts = true is set in this file. If not, use the sm_edit to open the adapter.conf file for editing as follows:

    <BASEDIR>\SAM\smarts\bin\sm_edit conf\INCHARGE-MOM\adapter.conf

  3. Make the required change to the acceptEventsFromUnknownHosts setting. Save and close the adapter.conf configuration file.
  4. Have the MOM server administrator update the forwarding rule group with the Smarts forwarding rule, and add the hosts where MOM notifications are missing in to the associated computer group.  This is done as follows:

    1. From the MOM Server Administration Console, import the Smarts Management Pack (mom2sam.akm). This package is shipped with Smarts SAM and will be found in the following location:

      <BASEDIR>\SAM\smarts\local\bin\momservice\mom2sam.akm

    2. When the mom2sam.akm package is imported, it creates a Smarts Rule Group (this may be called InCharge Rule Group, depending on your Smarts version). This rule group has the Smarts forwarding rule.
    3. Right-click the Forwarding Rule Group property, find the Computer Group associated with the rule group, and write down Computer Group Name.
    4. Find the Computer Group folder with this name, right-click the folder and select Property-->Include Computer. If the virtual host is not in this include list, add it here.
    5. Commit the change. The change will take a few minutes to populate in the MOM server.
