Symptoms:

Smarts Service Assurance Manager (Smarts SAM) Interface Disabled notification is not being generated even though Interface ADMIN Status has been set to DOWN

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

In Smarts SAM Interface Disabled events are not suppressed by default. The above issue can occur for the following reasons:

  • Interface Disabled events have been suppressed in the IP domain, or the Interface disabled events are no longer subscribed in the SAM Basedir/smarts/local/conf/ics/dxa-conn.conf
  • Interface Disabled events have been configured to be generated, but the required conditions have not been met. One following conditions must be met for these events to be generated:

    • The Interface Mode is Normal (it is a physical interface, not layered over any other interface) AND it has some underlying interface (sub-interface)
    • The Interface Mode is Normal AND the interface has a Peer (for example, the inteface is connected using a Cable or Network Connection)
    • The Interface Mode is Normal AND is part of Network Adapter Redundancy Group

Resolution

Interface Disabled events can be configured for generation on a per-Interface object basis as follows:
  1. Browse to the Interface concerned in the in the Smarts IP Manager Domain Admin Console.
  2. Set the SuppressDisabledNotifications attribute value to False.
  3. Run a Correlate Now and recompute codebook to activate the change for the interface.
  4. Repeat the preceding steps for each Interface object for which you want to generate Interface Disabled events.

When the above steps have been completed, Interface Disabled events will be generated when the Admin Status is down and one of the conditions described above has been met.

The second reason is that the SAM domain is no longer subscribed to the Interface disabled alerts. Compare your base dxa-conn.conf or the dxa file that you are using in SAM for subscribing to your IP domains.
The default in the dxa-conn.conf file is the following:

# Availability
sub     .*::.*::.*/p

If you see the following:

sub     *::*::~Disabled/pg

Then review this KB as if you want the Interface Disabled Alerts to show in SAM, you will need to check this KB and determine if the actions here were applied.
