Smarts SAM/IP: After changing the class of a device, rediscovery returns error message that the device cannot be promoted from class "xxx" to "yyy"

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After changing the class of a Smarts IP or Smarts SAM device in a certification or dynamic model, rediscovery of the device returns the following error message:

cannot be promoted from class "xxx" to "yyy"

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

Devices in Smarts SAM and Smarts IP are created in an object-oriented architecture.  Therefore, a Smarts SAM or Smarts IP device can only be changed to the class of a device that it is inherited from.  For example, you could not change a switch to a host because they are not related classes.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must delete the device from the Smarts SAM and Smarts IP topology and discover the device again.
