Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

No VRP or VPN alarms are generated within Smarts when Switch Port is operationally down that provides connectivity between PE Router and an undiscovered CE where MPLS protocol is running between the Routers
No VRF or VPN OSPF Sessions alarms are generated when Switch Port is operationally down that provides connectivity between PE Router and an undiscovered CE where an OSPF Area exists

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

The generation of a VPN or VRF Notification is dependent on the IP server generating a failure on the Router Interface which act as a protocol endpoint.  If the Switch itself or Switch Port that is Down fails to impact the Router Interface that is the protocol endpoint, then no VPN or VRF related Notification is generated.

Resolution

Discover the CE Router which was previously undiscovered if possible.  The addition of the CE router to the IP Topology will provide the needed symptom.  A connectivity loss on a Switch Port in between the local PE Router and remote CE Router will impact the remote Router Interface which will result in the generation of VRF and VPN  Notifications.
