Smarts SAM: What does the WINDOW option in the Smarts Trap Forwarder configuration file trapd.conf accomplish?
What exactly does WINDOW do and how does it works in trapd.conf?

Are varbinds used as part of trap de-duplication?

What factors make two traps identical?

The WINDOW option in the Smarts Trap Adapter configuration file (trapd.conf) sets the window size for deduplication. If two or more identical traps are received within fewer than #num# seconds, all but the first trap will be ignored.

The reason this works is that, from experience, often only a few devices are flooding the traps handler with traps, and dropping them allows the useful traps from other devices to get through.

For trap deduplication to apply, traps have to be identical. Traps are considered identical if the following parts are each equal to the same part in the second trap:

  • Agent address
  • GenericType
  • SpecificType
  • EnterpriseOID
  • Varbinds
  • Version
  • getCommunity
