Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

No BGP session alarms are generated when Switch Port is operationally down that provides connectivity between PE Router and an undiscovered CE where a BGP session is created

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

The generation of a BGP notification is dependent on the IP server generating a failure on the Router Interface, which act as a protocol endpoint. If the Switch itself or Switch Port that is down fails to impact the Router Interface that is the protocol endpoint, then no BGP notification is generated.

Resolution

Discover the CE Router which was previously undiscovered if possible.  The addition of the CE Router to the IP topology will allow the creation of a remote BGP session.  A connectivity loss on a Switch Port in between the local PE Router and remote CE Router will impact the remote Router Interface which will result in the generation of BGP session notification.
