Slow response when opening Notification Properties from the Global Console interface

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

The Notification Properties for each notification are being retrieved from the Global Manager and from all the underlying domains. This happens because the Fetch Local Notification Properties parameter is set to FALSE.

The Fetch Local Notification Properties parameter purpose and function
The Fetch Local Notification Properties parameter controls the retrieval of properties for a particular notification upon request by a client application. When this parameter is set to FALSE, properties for each notification are always retrieved from the Global Manager and from all the underlying domains. This can greatly increase the time required to complete the retrieval operation. When this parameter is set to TRUE and you open Notification Properties for a notification, properties are retrieved initially only from the local SAM Global Manager, and the Fetch Details button is enabled. Clicking the Fetch Details button allows you to access the Details tab containing the details for a notification from underlying domains only when you want those details.

Resolution

To improve performance when opening Notification Properties from the Global Console interface, do the folllowing depending on your version of Smarts SAM.

Smarts SAM 7.1 and later versions
For Smarts SAM 7.1 and later versions, do the following:

  1. Launch the Smarts Global Manager Administration Console.
  2. Select the ICS Configuration function.
  3. In the System Defaults section of the ICS Configuration dialog, set the Fetch Local Notification Properties parameter to TRUE
  4. Click Apply.

Smarts SAM versions earlier than 7.1
For Smarts SAM versions earlier than 7.1, do the following:

  1. Open the Smarts ics.conf configuration file using sm_edit.
  2. Find the parameter called FetchLocalNotificationProperties and set its value to TRUE.
  3. Save and close the ics.conf configuration file.
