Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Smarts IP host is not generating a Host Down event when network cable is unplugged

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

Host is discovered ICMPONLY and connects to an unmanaged hub, while the hub is connected to a managed router.

Resolution

When a host that is discovered ICMPONLY is connected to an unmanaged hub/switch, the objects being monitored for correlation are the IP address and the Host itself.  When the cable is pulled from the host that is connected to an unmanaged device, it will only generate IP Down, IP Unresponsive and Host Unresponsive notifications.  If the host is connected to a managed device, you will have an additional NetworkConnection Down notification which will cause the Host Down notification to appear. This is because the port on the managed device the host is connected to now has an admin status that is up and an oper status that is down.
