Smarts SNMP walk (sm_snmpwalk) of Juniper ERX device times out

Environment

10.1.x

Cause

Juniper ERX devices can have an extremely large number of interfaces. Since SNMP queries have a very low prority over the network, SNMP packets can be dropped which in turn can cause an SNMP walk of Juniper ERX devices to time out.

Resolution

If the Smarts SNMP walk (sm_snmpwalk) of a Juniper ERX device times out, add the Juniper ERX OIDs listed in the section below to an SNMP walk configuration file, and reference this file in the sm_snmpwalk command as follows:

<BASEDIR>/IP/smarts/bin/sm_snmpwalk -c <community string> --oidfile=<Filename> <device name>

When the Juniper ERX device is large, only the OIDs listed in the referenced configuration file will be used to obtain the walk, which should prevent the timeout error.

Sample SNMP walk configuration file
A sample configuration file (snmpwalk.conf) is provided by Smarts in the discovery directory, which is found in one of the following locations:

  • <BASEDIR>/IP/smarts/conf/discovery
  • <BASEDIR>/IP/smarts/local/conf/discovery
Juniper ERX OIDs used in Smarts SNMP walk
Below is the list of OIDs used in Smarts SNMP walk of Juniper ERX devices. You can overwrite the sample snmpwalk.conf file using these OIDs, or create and use a different SNMP walk configuration file listing these OIDs. However, whatever file you use, the file containing the OID list must exist in the discovery directory before you attempt the SNMP walk.
