Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:



 

Receive the following error in the MCAST log file:

pim-interface.asl : No MCAST speaker discovered for <device_name> discovery

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

This error may be generated for the following reasons:

• When a device discovered by the Smarts Multicast domain is not MCAST-enabled.
• When the SNMP time-out is too short and the discovery does not wait long enough for the devices to respond. 

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do the following:

1. Verify/ensure that the PIM MIB (.1.3.6.1.3.61.1.1.5.1.6) is enabled on the device.
2. If necessary, the SNMP time-out can be increased. This is done in the multicast.conf configuration file found here: 
   
   <BASEDIR>/MCAST/smarts/conf/mcast
   
   
   The following example shows the SNMP_timeout and SNMP_retries in this file increased from their default settings (the default values are commented out):
   
   ################################################################
   # SNMP Parameters
   ################################################################
   
   # SNMP timeout to be set for discovery
   ## SNMP_timeout = 500
   SNMP_timeout = 1000
   
   # SNMP number of retries to be set for discovery
   ## SNMP_retries = 2
   SNMP_retries = 3
