How are impacts calculated in Smarts Business Impact Manager (Smarts BIM)?

For Notifications that are root events, Smarts BIM calculates an impact by taking the value for each impacted element displayed in the Notification Properties view under the Impact tab. These impacts will be assigned from the appropriate weighting in the weights.conf file (see Note statement). Each individual impact will have an effect on the total but only the "first best match" will be taken into account. For example, if a router down is an impact and the weights.conf file has the following:
  • Classweight ICIM_ManagedElement 1
  • Classweight Router 10

The impact of the router will be 10 as because it is an ICIM_ManagedElement, the Router Class is a better fit for the device.

Additional Information

The weights.conf file is configurable and impacts are recalculated every 20 seconds by default.
